Hey Spring Chickens!
Have you tried CBD Oil Yet? If not, you could be missing a slew of benefits.
According to this Gallup Poll about 1 in five people in the US use CBD Oil to help with symptoms for ailments such as anxiety, sleeplessness and pain.
But the benefits go way beyond alleviating just a few symptoms of the natural aging process. This compound has been used for centuries to treat a long list of illnesses and ailments of the body and mind.
Some studies have dated it’s use to manage pain all the way back to 2900 BC.
Check out the benefits to see if it might be right for you.
First of all : What is CBD?
CBD stands for Cannabidiol. And, it does not get you high or impair your functions.
It’s a compound that is extracted from hemp plants but it does not contain THC ( the intoxicating substance) like regular run of the mill marijuana.
It won’t give you the munchies, make you sleepy or giggle the day away.
Do you have to smoke it?
Nope. That’s traditional marijuana and a completely different subject. CBD is different.
Most CBD is delivered in the form of an oil under your tongue (sublingual delivery), in pre-made edible form (like candy) or in lotions and creams.
We even recently purchased some CDB Coffee because research is showing some great benefits of CBD and caffeine together.
What are the Benefits of CBD?
1. Pain Relief
I am not going to get too technical but the human body has a endocannabinoid system that regulates responses to pain, sleep, appetite and immune system reactions.
The body produces endocannabinoid neurotransmitters that bind with cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system.
CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound.
There have been some great strides in CBD studies since it’s legalization on a Federal Level and it has been shown to reduce muscle, joint, nerve and arthritis pain.
Oils and tinctures taken in a sublingual manner (under the tounge) have an all over effect while creams and lotions can target muscles and joints specifically.
Studies have shown that the non-psychoactive CBD compound especially when combined with THC can be effective in reducing the pain of illnesses like Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis.
2. CBD May have Neuroprotective Qualities
People with illnesses like Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease have found relief with CBD because it has been proven to limit muscle spasms better than traditional pharmaceuticals in a clinical setting.
This not only improves the quality of sleep but also the quality of life.
My Mom had Parkinson’s Disease and refused to use CBD because she didn’t want to be a “pot head”. I really wish that I could have helped her more but I promise that CBD is not “pot” and will not turn you into a Doritos munching stoner.
As an aging GenXer some of my friends have used CBD for MS, Sciatica and Arthritis with nothing less than excellent reports on the effectiveness.
3. Prevent or Delay the Onset of Alzheimer’s & Dementia Symptom Control
This is a big one. It hits on our greatest fears.
A lot of the therapeutic properties of CBD is linked to the anti-inflammatory response it creates in the body and the brain is no different.
Studies suggest that marijuana and by extension CBD can help to eliminate the toxic protein that is believed to be responsible for Alzheimer’s.
A lot more research is needed to prove this but it is believed that when the anti-inflammatory nature of CBD works within the brain it is able to shed some of the damaged cells and regenerate new cells.
Dementia Symptom Control
There is a lot of controversy on whether CBD provides any reversal in Dementia patients. But it has been used successfully and studied in reducing Dementia symptoms like agitation and aggression.
This is important and not to be taken lightly. Dementia symptoms like these can create a spiral effect of loved ones avoiding the patient and causing a faster decline in overall health and well being.
4. Fights Glaucoma
This is one that is surrounded by controversy. Ophthalmologists have been recommending cannabis to lower the inter-ocular eye pressure since the 1970’s. But some believe that it is not appropriate at all stages of the disease.
Talk to your eye doctor if you have glaucoma.
5. Bone Health
Ohhhhh, this is a good one and affects millions of people (mostly women over 40) every year.
There have been studies suggesting that CBD can reverse…not just prevent, bone loss.
Gone are the days of doctors telling you to drink gallons of milk(which may actually be harmful regarding bone loss).
CBD has been show to reverse bone loss and regenerate the bones in some studies.
6. Soothes Anxiety & Depression
Yep, I have used CBD to fight anxiety. And, it works as well as any of the prescriptions I was urged to take.
Anyone over the age of ten has experienced anxiety in some form and I see no shame in admitting it.
Of course you should talk to your doctor or counselor about your symptoms but CBD has been proven to work as well or better than pharmaceuticals.
The greatest advantage for me was getting my creativity back. I felt like a drone who just trudged to work and trudged back each day while on prescription meds. I had trouble “feeling” love and it turned intimacy into a chore. I can’t say enough about how this compound helped me through my “rough patch”.
7. Fights Insomnia
CBD has shown to help people (especially aging people) sustain deeper sleep cycles and reduce lighter sleep cycles.
Deep sleep allows your body and brain to regenerate and shed toxins. The relationship between CBD and deeper sleep could be caused by a number of factors like less inflammation, pain and a feeling of well being.
No matter the origin, deeper, quality sleep allows for more rejuvenation and helps fight off some of the previous ailments in this list.
8. Alternative to Prescription Medications
No deaths from CBD (or THC) have EVER been recorded.
Unless you have been living on an island with no communication from the outside world you are aware of the current opioid crisis. And, the continuous rise in drug prices.
Now, please do not think that I am telling you that you can safely stop taking prescription medications. I absolutely am not.
But, CBD has a very low/non-existent rate of addiction, is less expensive than and in some case more effective than prescription meds. Talk to your doc.
9. Stimulates Appetite
Loss of appetite is a big issue among those who fall into a certain age group. Whether this is is you or your parents/loved ones it’s an important consideration.
Loss of appetite can lead to muscle loss, weakened immune systems and mental issues. CBD & THC can both help with appetite loss but the THC in this part of the post should be taken with caution and under a doctors approval.
10. Can Alleviate Cancer Related Symptoms
CBD has been shown to relieve the pain and anxiety often observed in Cancer patients.
It has long been known that THC can help with cancer related pain but newer studies suggest that CBD given in conjunction with THC provides more relief than just THC alone.
11. CBD and Heart Health
High Blood Pressure is a global issue that affect millions of people. It can lead to heart disease, stroke, impotence and even death.
Thom and I have long been screaming about the wonderful affects that the Keto Diet has on reducing blood pressure on our other blog Castleinthemountains.com.
But even if you don’t do the low carb thing CBD can lower your BP. Check out this study that says one dose can lower HBP faster than traditional medications (without the cost and side effects).
As a trained healthcare professional I have to say it one last time….ASK YOUR DOCTOR before you stop taking any prescribed medication.
There are too many benefits of CBD to list in this post. Check out this info-graph…
Is CBD Safe?
Yes. For most people CBD is completely safe. Are there still some skeptics out there…also yes.
Are there exceptions to CBD being safe…a few. Which is why it is important to ask your GP before you begin any new regimes if you are on medications for chronic illnesses.
With all of that out of the way please purchase QUALITY over QUANTITY when it comes to CBD. I have seen CBD for sale in gas stations for $3.95. Would I ingest those? No way.
CBD is not yet Federally Regulated and you should buy it from reputable dealers and avoid cheapie products from foreign dealers.
This is not an affiliate link and I do not get paid a penny to endorse their products.
But, I buy from them. I know them. And, I trust them to provide safe and effective products. They have stores all over the US and ship to your home. ( They even have pet products if you are as into your pets as we are.)
Beware that CBD could have some side effects for some people…
Digestive issues, appetite changes, and sleep patterns might be affected. You will need to start out slow and find the most effective dose for yourself if you do decide to take CBD.
Be aware that while on a Federal Level CBD is legal in all 50 States in the United States, it is still illegal in some states on a State level.
If you aren’t sure if this includes you then check out this map if you are concerned about your state. Outside of the US…you’ll need to find out what your laws are.
Could CDB Right for You?
Whether or not CBD is right for you is a matter of choice and partly circumstance.
If you can wrap your head around the benefits and push out all of the old school, negative connotations associated with “MaryJane” you could really get some great benefits out of using CBD.
Remember CBD is not “Pot” and will not get you intoxicated or ousted from family dinners or community functions…
